The Lion King is the 32nd feature-length animated film from Walt Disney Studios and was released in 1994. In terms of box office takings, it is the most commercially successful classic animated film worldwide to date. The plot of the film revolves around the lion cub Simba and his arduous search for his place in the circle of life.
In 2011, a 3D re-release of the original film was shown in cinemas distributed by Walt Disney, which was released in German-speaking countries on 10 November 2011.
The sequels The Lion King 2 – Simba’s Kingdom and The Lion King 3 – Hakuna Matata were released in 1998 and 2004. In 1997, the film was adapted into a musical. Disney is also planning a live-action film adaptation, to be directed by Jon Favreau and released in cinemas in 2019 to mark the 25th anniversary of the original.
